Frequently Asked Questions

Timber

Most of the timber being put through our workshop is South West WA Jarrah, Sheoak, Marri (Redgum), Blackbutt, Norfolk Pine and Cypress Pine. We do have some other rarer timbers, such as Wandoo and Peppermint, and can source other varieties if required.

We have an assortment of slabs, boards, offcuts, turning blanks, structural timber and more. This varies from Jarrah, Sheoak, Marri, Tuart, Blackbutt, Wandoo and a variety of Pines.

There is a large range of different sized slabs and boards for making your own furniture, a mix of small to large and odd-shaped offcuts perfect for hobbyists, plenty of burls and turning blanks for woodturners, plus a range of structural posts and timber beams available at request.

Most of the timber I use has been sourced from wind-fallen trees on friends farms in the South West region over the years and previously milled into boards or slabs. A lot of it has been collected after sitting dry in farm sheds for over 10 years.

Absolutely. I will usually need to assess the timber first (to ensure it is dry enough, and workable), and if it gets the tick of approval, I can liase with you to design and create whatever it is you’re envisioning.

We will send you care instructions with any of your products, to help keep them looking the best at all times. You are able to use our serving boards and chopping boards the same as you would with any timber board. We suggest purchasing a food-safe oil or wax to protect it. Ask us about our stock of a great family-run West Australian brand we swear by.

Sustainability

The timber industry is known to be fairly destructive to nature. Fortunately, great efforts are being made to minimise this damage.

The timber we use at CavesTimbers is generally from old trees that had been felled for other reasons than timber-milling (eg, wind-fallen on farms, cut for property clearing), a long time ago. They would have been milled and stored to air dry for 10-30+ years.

If I am required to source timber for a job that I do not already have on hand (usually due to a customer requiring specific measurements), I will only purchase from reputable sellers in the South West region, that can explain the personal story of each piece that I buy. In most instances, it will align similarly with my efforts and be guaranteed dry for me to work with.

Reducing our footprint and environmental impact as much as possible is a key focus for us at CavesTimbers. We acheive this by;

  • Using local and environmentally-safe minerals and oils where possible. The resin that I use in my work is by Flow Resins. The resin is low-odour, and we dispose of our packaging extremely thoughtfully. The oil and wax that is used on my boards is predominately by Gilly’s. Both of these companies are 100% Australian owned and family run, located in Perth. By using these companies products, we are ensuring a low footprint for post, we are supporting small local business’, and we can ensure the products are of the highest quality, and as environmentally friendly as we can find.

  • Giving life back to some of the least-likely pieces of timber. Most of the work you see at CavesTimbers is with pieces of timber that would be otherwise frowned upon or discarded by woodworkers. My intention is to design products that can incorporate rotted, termite-eaten “firewood” into a piece that can last a lifetime in someone’s home.

  • Only using recycled paper products for any marketing and printing (business cards, product tags, brochures, etc).

  • Not using plastic for our own packaging of products shipped. We use fully compostable bubble wrap, recycled brown kraft paper, compostable sticky-tape and compostable twine only.

Shipping / Returns / Payments

You can make a payment via our online payment system, or contact us if you would prefer to Direct Deposit or request a Square payment link to be sent.

For larger products, we would require a deposit until shipping/pick up is confirmed and then final payment will be due. Please contact us directly if you are interested in a large/heavy product you see online.

Shipping costs will be determined mostly by the size of the product you have purchased, as well as the weight. We use different postal services and couriers depending on where you are in the world, and what we’re shipping. We will always give you an estimate quote on postage at the beginning of your order.

This depends on the postal service being used. We will provide you with a tracking number, so that we can keep tabs on where your item is at all times.
